DBS checks and onboarding: what employers usually ask for

A simple overview of DBS checks in hiring, and how NI details can come up in payroll onboarding.

Some roles require background checks such as a DBS check. This is separate from your NI number, but onboarding often collects everything together (identity, right to work, payroll details).

What employers may request (varies by role)

  • Proof of identity and address
  • Right to work evidence (where relevant)
  • References and checks for regulated roles
  • Payroll details, including your NI number (when available)
