NI number vs right to work: what’s the difference?

Employers often ask for both. Here’s what each is used for and what to do if you’re missing one.


Your National Insurance number is mainly for tax and National Insurance contributions. Your right to work is about whether you are legally allowed to work in the UK. They are different checks.

Once you start work, your employer will normally ask for your NI number for payroll records. If you cannot find it, follow the GOV.UK guidance and provide it as soon as possible.
