NI plastic cards: what they are (and what they are not)
A straight explanation: useful reminder, not a government-issued ID card.
A plastic NI card is a durable reminder card that displays your NI number. It is not an official document issued by the government and it is not a form of identification.
When it can help
- If you often need to provide your NI number to employers or agencies
- If you want a wallet-sized reminder (instead of paper notes)
Important limitations
- Not official ID
- Not a substitute for GOV.UK/HMRC documentation
- You must already have an NI number to order a card
If you cannot find your NI number, start with GOV.UK: Find your NI number.
Order a plastic NI card via NinoDirect.
