No P45? Starter checklist explained (and how it affects your tax)
What the starter checklist is, why employers use it, and how to avoid early payroll issues.
If you start a new job without a P45, your employer may ask you to complete the HMRC starter checklist. This helps them set you up on payroll and apply the best tax treatment they can from the start.
Why it matters
- It helps your employer work out how much tax to take from your pay.
- It reduces the risk of being put on the wrong tax code at the beginning.

Quick checklist
- Give accurate personal details (name, address, date of birth).
- Provide your NI number if you have it — or tell them you will provide it as soon as you find it.
- Review your first payslip carefully.
