What to check on your first payslip (to avoid pay & tax surprises)

A simple payslip checklist, especially useful if you started without a P45 or NI number.

Your first payslip is where most problems show up — wrong name/address, missing NI number, incorrect tax code, or unexpected deductions. Checking early makes fixes easier.

What to check

  • Name & address — must match your records.
  • NI number — if you provided it, make sure it is recorded correctly.
  • Tax code — ask payroll if it looks wrong.
  • Pay period & hours — match your contract/rota.
  • Deductions — PAYE tax, NI contributions, pension, student loan (if applicable).
